Understand the choice

Academic and professional precision depends on calibration. Hedging distinguishes evidence from certainty, while concession shows that a limitation was considered rather than ignored.

Core rule: Although/even though introduce concession; however/nevertheless link contrasting statements; appear/seem/may/tend to hedge strength.

Notice it in context

Although the sample is small, the findings appear to support the hypothesis.

Although concedes a limitation; appear to support avoids claiming proof; hypothesis names the evaluated idea.

What to remember

  • Although takes a clause; despite/in spite of take a noun phrase or -ing form.
  • However is not a simple coordinating conjunction and usually needs stronger punctuation than but.

Common trap: Do not pile up may, might, perhaps, and seems until the claim becomes unreadably vague.
