Public services and local government

Report community problems and follow administrative processes.

Understand the choice

Civic tasks are easier when the request includes the affected service, location, dates, and desired response. The vocabulary covers both the authority and the service users.

Core rule: Submit/file a complaint, apply for a permit, maintain a facility, and provide a public service are administrative collocations.

Notice it in context

Residents submitted a complaint about unreliable public transport.

Los residentes presentaron una queja sobre el transporte público poco fiable.

Residents is plural agent; submitted marks completed formal action; about introduces its subject.

The council approved a permit for maintenance of the sports facility.

The local authority authorized work that keeps the sports site functioning.

Council, permit, maintenance, and facility describe an approval.

Waste collection and public transport affect every resident.

Rubbish removal and shared travel matter to each local inhabitant.

Waste collection, public transport, and resident identify services and users.

What to remember

  • Council has different structures across countries; translate the function, not only the label.
  • Facilities is often plural for buildings, equipment, or services available at a site.

Common trap: Do not use reclamation for a complaint; in English reclamation usually means recovering land or material.
