Describe a route through woods, rivers, mountains, islands, and coasts.
Understand the choice
Landscape words become memorable as a route. A trail crosses a forest, follows a river, climbs a mountain, and reaches a lake or beach.
Core rule: Cross takes a direct object; reach takes a destination directly; arrive at/in uses a preposition.
Notice it in context
The trail crosses the forest and reaches a quiet lake.

Trail is subject; forest/lake are direct objects of cross/reach without extra prepositions.
The mountain dominates the landscape, and a river flows below.

What to remember
- Woods is a smaller wooded area or plural mass; forest is larger.
- Reach the station, but arrive at the station.
Common trap: Do not add to after reach: reach the lake.
