Days of the week

Schedule one event and describe weekly habits with on.

Understand the choice

English weekdays are proper nouns and always capitalized. On Monday can mean a particular or recurring Monday; Mondays/every Monday makes habit explicit.

Core rule: Use on + weekday; plural weekdays or every + singular can express a weekly habit.

Notice it in context

I work on Monday, but I am free on Tuesday.

Trabajo el lunes, pero estoy libre el martes.

On appears before both weekday names; I am free uses be + adjective.

We play football every Wednesday.

Wednesday is our weekly football day.

Every Wednesday marks recurring habit.

At the weekend, we visit family on Sunday.

The weekend includes a Sunday family visit.

Weekend and Sunday appear in two time phrases.

What to remember

  • US English prefers on the weekend; UK English often at the weekend.
  • Weekday names always begin with a capital letter.
