Months and seasons

Place events in months, seasons, and years with in.

Understand the choice

Calendar scale determines the preposition. Days use on, clock times at, and months/seasons/years in.

Core rule: Use in + month, season, or year; names of months are capitalized, seasons usually are not.

Notice it in context

We travel in July, but we stay home in winter.

Viajamos en julio, pero nos quedamos en casa en invierno.

In July and in winter use the same broad-time preposition but different capitalization.

Spring begins in March.

March is the month when spring starts.

Spring and a month form a seasonal statement.

Autumn is cool, and summer is usually warm.

The season after summer is cool; the warm season is usually hot.

Autumn and summer appear as subjects.

What to remember

  • Fall is the common US alternative to autumn.
  • Seasons are capitalized only at the start of a sentence or in a title.

Common trap: Do not use on July.
