Everyday food

Organize staple foods into meals and preferences.

Understand the choice

Food words differ in countability. Bread, cheese, meat, rice, and fruit are often uncountable; egg and individual vegetables are countable.

Core rule: Use eat with food; for breakfast/lunch/dinner labels what is eaten at that meal.

Notice it in context

For breakfast, I eat bread and cheese.

Para el desayuno, como pan y queso.

For breakfast is a fronted meal phrase; bread and cheese are articleless general foods.

We eat fish with rice and vegetables for lunch.

Fish, rice, and vegetables make our midday meal.

Fish, rice, and vegetables form one meal set.

I like eggs, but I prefer fruit.

Eggs please me, but fruit is my first choice.

Egg becomes plural eggs; fruit stays a common mass noun.

What to remember

  • A piece/slice of bread makes bread countable.
  • Fruit can be plural fruits when discussing kinds, especially formally.

Common trap: Do not add a/an before uncountable bread or rice in a general statement.
