Connectors that make Spanish flow
Correct, reframe, contrast, and change direction without starting every sentence from zero.
Understand the choice
Fluent conversation is not only vocabulary and verb endings; it is also guidance for the listener. De hecho strengthens or corrects, o sea reformulates, aun así concedes a contrast, and por cierto opens a side path. These markers organize the relationship between ideas.
Core rule: Discourse markers tell the listener how a new idea corrects, reframes, contrasts, or changes direction.
Notice it in context
De hecho, no estaba enfadada; simplemente estaba cansada.
In fact, she was not angry; she was simply tired.
De hecho corrects the assumption of anger; simplemente supplies the more accurate explanation.
Llegará el viernes, o sea, dentro de dos días.
She will arrive Friday—that is, in two days.
O sea reformulates the same information more clearly.
Era caro; aun así, lo compramos.
It was expensive; even so, we bought it.
Aun así keeps the result despite the obstacle.

By the way, have you spoken with Marta?
Por cierto introduces a related side topic.
Resulta que ya se conocían.

Resulta que reveals information that changes the picture.

What to remember
- Choose a connector for the relationship between ideas, not merely to fill a pause.
- O sea can clarify or self-correct, while de hecho normally confirms, strengthens, or corrects a claim.
- Aun así preserves an unexpected result; en cambio contrasts two people, things, or situations.
Common trap: Do not translate English actually with actualmente. Use de hecho or en realidad when you mean in fact.
