Conditional for tact
Create tactful distance in requests, advice, and proposals.
Understand the choice
Conditional forms create social and argumentative distance. They can turn a command into a request, present advice as one perspective, or offer a proposal without claiming it is the only possible action.
Core rule: The conditional softens requests, suggestions, and opinions by presenting them with distance rather than as direct demands.
Notice it in context
¿Podrías enviarme la propuesta cuando pudieras?
Could you send me the proposal when you are able?
The conditional softens requests, suggestions, and opinions by presenting them with distance rather than as direct demands.
Yo cambiaría la última parte.
I would change the last part.
The conditional softens advice.
Nos gustaría hablar con la directora.
We would like to speak with the director.
Gustaría makes a courteous request.
What to remember
- Querría and quisiera can both soften a wish, with quisiera especially conventional in requests.
- Conditional questions such as ¿podrías…? usually invite cooperation rather than ask literally about ability.
Common trap: A conditional request can still sound demanding without courtesy, context, or appropriate tone. Grammar softens distance; it does not replace social judgment.
