What to remember
- Say había una mesa and había muchas personas: quantity does not pluralize the impersonal verb.
- Habían + participle is plural only when haber is an auxiliary with a plural subject.
Common trap: Do not say habían sillas for simple existence in standard Spanish. Use no había sillas; reserve habían for forms such as ellos habían llegado.
