Ser in the preterite

Describe a finished identity, quality, or event with fui forms.

Understand the choice

Use the preterite of ser when an identity, quality, or event is viewed as a completed whole: a finished job, a concluded meeting, or an evaluation of a past occasion. Context separates these forms from ir.

Core rule: Use the preterite of ser for completed events and descriptions framed as finished.

Notice it in context

La reunión fue breve, pero las decisiones fueron importantes.

The meeting was brief, but the decisions were important.

Use the preterite of ser for completed events and descriptions framed as finished.

Fui camarero durante un verano.

I was a waiter for one summer.

Fui frames the finished period as a whole.

Fuimos los últimos en salir.

We were the last to leave.

Fuimos is the first-person plural form.

What to remember

  • Fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fuisteis, fueron are identical to the preterite forms of ir.
  • A destination points to ir; a noun, adjective, or event description normally points to ser.

Common trap: Do not add written accents to fue, fui, or the other forms. Context—not spelling—distinguishes “was” from “went.”
