Por or para

Read one preposition as cause or path and the other as destination.

Understand the choice

Por looks back toward a cause or through a route, means, exchange, or duration. Para looks forward toward a recipient, destination, purpose, opinion, or deadline. Learn the direction of each relationship rather than a translation list.

Core rule: Para points toward a recipient, purpose, destination, or deadline; por presents cause, exchange, route, means, or duration.

Notice it in context

Este regalo es para ti y lo compré por internet.

This gift is for you and I bought it online.

Para points toward a recipient, purpose, destination, or deadline; por presents cause, exchange, route, means, or duration.

Salimos para Valencia mañana.

We leave for Valencia tomorrow.

Para points to the destination.

Gracias por venir.

Thank you for coming.

Por introduces the reason for thanks.

What to remember

  • Para + infinitive answers “for what purpose?”: estudio para aprender.
  • Por often names an exchange or motive: veinte euros por el libro; lo hice por ti.

Common trap: Do not assign one English translation to each preposition. “For” can be para in un regalo para ti but por in gracias por venir.
