Hablar in the preterite
Present completed speech with regular -ar past endings.
Understand the choice
The regular -ar preterite presents speech as a finished event: a call, conversation, or statement with clear boundaries. Remove -ar and add the six preterite endings without changing the stem habl-.
Core rule: Regular -ar preterite endings are -é, -aste, -ó, -amos, -asteis, -aron.

Hablé con Ana y hablamos durante una hora.
I spoke with Ana and we talked for an hour.

What to remember
- Only the yo and él/ella forms carry accents: hablé and habló.
- Hablamos can mean we speak or we spoke; a past-time phrase resolves the tense.
Common trap: Do not confuse habló with hablo. The accent changes both stress and person: habló is he or she spoke; hablo is I speak.
