Hacer in the present

Handle doing, making, weather, and common fixed expressions.

Understand the choice

Hacer covers tasks, creation, weather, and many fixed expressions. Attach each form to a common noun instead of forcing a separate Spanish verb for English do and make.

Core rule: Hacer means both to do and to make; only the present yo form is irregular: hago.

Notice it in context

Hago la cena y hacemos café.

I make dinner and we make coffee.

Hago has irregular g; hacemos returns to the regular stem and ending.

¿Qué haces los sábados?

What do you do on Saturdays?

Haces asks about a familiar person's routine.

Hace buen tiempo hoy.

The weather is good today.

Impersonal weather uses the third-person form hace.

What to remember

  • Hacer la compra means to do the shopping.
  • Hacer una pregunta means to ask a question.

Common trap: Do not translate every English make with hacer; decisions use tomar una decisión, for example.
