Hablar: regular -ar present

Master the ending pattern shared by regular -ar verbs.

Understand the choice

Hablar is the model for thousands of regular -ar verbs. Learn the ending pattern once, then transfer it to trabajar, estudiar, comprar, and escuchar.

Core rule: Regular -ar present endings are -o, -as, -a, -amos, -áis, -an; remove -ar from hablar before adding them.

Notice it in context

Hablo español y hablamos inglés en casa.

I speak Spanish and we speak English at home.

Hablo and hablamos share the stem habl- with different person endings.

¿Hablas con tu familia cada día?

Do you speak with your family every day?

Hablas is the tú form and con introduces the other person.

La profesora habla despacio.

The teacher speaks slowly.

Habla is third-person singular.

What to remember

  • The nosotros ending -amos identifies both present and some past forms; context matters.
  • Language names normally follow hablar without an article.

Common trap: Do not keep the infinitive ending before adding a person ending: hablo, not hablaro.
