Places in town

Find essential services and landmarks around town.

Understand the choice

Find essential services and landmarks in an unfamiliar town. Pair each place with estar, ir a, and a simple location phrase.

Core rule: Use estar to locate city places and entre ... y ... to place something between two reference points.

Notice it in context

La farmacia está entre el banco y el supermercado.

The pharmacy is between the bank and the supermarket.

Está locates the pharmacy between two named places.

Voy al banco después del trabajo.

I go to the bank after work.

A + el contracts to al.

La biblioteca está cerca de la plaza.

The library is near the square.

Cerca requires de before its reference point.

What to remember

  • Farmacia is the shop and often displays a green cross.
  • Estación needs context or a modifier for bus or train station.

Common trap: Do not confuse biblioteca with librería: a biblioteca lends books; a librería sells them.
