Concession and opposition
Acknowledge a fact while showing it does not block a contrasting result.
Understand the choice
Concession differs from simple contrast because the first fact could have prevented the second. Syntax distinguishes a clause connector from a noun preposition and a connective adverb.
Core rule: Chociaż/mimo że introduce concessive clauses; mimo/pomimo take genitive nouns; jednak/mimo to link independent statements.
Notice it in context
Chociaż metoda jest niedoskonała, nadal pozostaje użyteczna.
Although the method is imperfect, it remains useful.
Chociaż introduces a full clause; pozostaje states the result that survives limitation.
Mimo wzrostu kosztów projekt jest kontynuowany.
Despite rising costs, the project continues.
Mimo takes genitive noun phrase wzrostu kosztów.
Było wiele zastrzeżeń; jednak propozycję przyjęto.
There were many objections; however, the proposal was accepted.
Jednak links independent statements; impersonal przyjęto reports result.
What to remember
- Choć is a shorter equivalent of chociaż.
- Pomimo tego, że introduces a clause but is heavier/formal.
Common trap: Do not put a nominative noun directly after mimo.
