Complex conditional periods
Contrast real jeśli, unreal gdyby, and counterfactual past through mood, aspect, and context.
Understand the choice
Connector choice shows how the speaker views possibility. Jeśli leaves it open; gdyby distances it from current reality. Aspect marks whether outcomes are bounded.
Core rule: Real conditions use jeśli/jeżeli + indicative; unreal conditions use gdyby + conditional-style person marking and a conditional result.
Notice it in context
Jeśli zdążymy, podpiszemy umowę; gdybyśmy mieli więcej czasu, sprawdzilibyśmy ją ponownie.
If we make it, we will sign the contract; if we had more time, we would check it again.
Zdążymy/podpiszemy are real perfective futures; gdybyśmy/mieli and sprawdzilibyśmy mark unreal alternative.
Jeżeli pada, zostajemy w domu.
If it rains, we stay home.
Indicative imperfective forms describe a real/habitual condition.
Gdyby zadzwonił wcześniej, odebralibyśmy go z dworca.
If he had called earlier, we would have picked him up.
Gdyby + perfective past supports counterfactual past.
What to remember
- Gdy may mean when or if in literary/formal contexts; gdyby is explicitly hypothetical.
- Conditional by can attach to the conjunction with person endings.
Common trap: Do not mix jeśli with a bare conditional condition when an open real meaning is intended.
