Być in past counterfactuals
Combine conditional auxiliary forms with a past participle to express an unreal past state/result.
Understand the choice
Polish does not require a separate pluperfect auxiliary in ordinary counterfactuals. Aspect, past forms, and gdyby/by signal that the condition did not happen.
Core rule: Past counterfactuals use gdyby + person ending and past forms, with conditional result; context establishes unreal past.
Notice it in context
Gdybym był wcześniej gotowy, zdążyłbym na pociąg.
If I had been ready earlier, I would have caught the train.
Gdybym carries first person; był/gotowy mark male speaker; zdążyłbym is conditional result.
Gdyby była ostrożniejsza, nie popełniłaby błędu.
If she had been more careful, she would not have made the mistake.
Była and popełniłaby agree feminine.
Gdybyśmy byli na miejscu, pomoglibyśmy.
If we had been there, we would have helped.
Gdybyśmy marks my; byli/pomoglibyśmy masculine/mixed.
What to remember
- Temporal context distinguishes unreal present from unreal past when forms overlap.
- Perfective result verbs strongly support a past counterfactual reading.
Common trap: Do not put future forms after gdyby in this standard pattern.
