Adverbial participles
Use -ąc for simultaneous actions and -wszy/-łszy for an earlier completed action with the same subject.
Understand the choice
Adverbial participles compress time relations without conjugation or agreement. The shared-subject rule prevents ambiguous dangling modifiers.
Core rule: Imperfective -ąc expresses simultaneity; perfective -wszy/-łszy expresses prior completion; the understood subject must match the main-clause subject.
Notice it in context
Czytając raport, zaznaczałem najważniejsze fragmenty.
While reading the report, I marked the most important passages.
Czytając is simultaneous with zaznaczałem and both have the same male speaker subject.
Przeczytawszy umowę, podpisała dokument.
Having read the contract, she signed the document.
Perfective przeczytawszy is completed before podpisała.
Idąc do pracy, słuchamy podcastu.
Walking to work, we listen to a podcast.
Idąc and słuchamy share my subject.
What to remember
- These forms are more common in writing, especially perfective -wszy.
- Everyday speech often uses kiedy/po tym jak clauses instead.
Common trap: Do not use an adverbial participle when the two clauses have different subjects.
