Numerals and agreement
Handle 2–4, 5+, masculine-personal forms, and verb agreement after quantified subjects.
Understand the choice
Polish numeral syntax changes at five and with masculine-personal reference. Treat the numeral phrase as a grammatical unit controlling both noun case and verb number.
Core rule: 2–4 use plural nominative patterns; 5+ govern genitive plural and a neuter singular verb, while masculine-personal 2–4 use dwaj/trzej/czterej or genitive-style dwóch/trzech/czterech.
Notice it in context
Dwie osoby czekają, ale pięciu klientów czeka.
Two people are waiting, but five clients are waiting.
Dwie osoby triggers plural czekają; pięciu klientów triggers singular czeka.
Trzy zadania są gotowe, a sześć zadań jest trudnych.
Three tasks are ready, and six tasks are difficult.
Three gives nominative plural and są; six genitive plural and jest.
Dwaj koledzy przyszli, ale pięciu kolegów zostało.
Two colleagues came, but five stayed.
Masculine-personal dwaj and pięciu control different agreement.
What to remember
- Compound number behavior depends on the final component, with teens as exceptions.
- Collective numerals serve mixed groups/children and plural-only nouns.
Common trap: Do not use plural verb automatically after every quantity.
