Prefixed motion verbs
Add direction and boundary through przy-, wy-, wej-, prze-, do-, and od-.
Understand the choice
A motion sequence becomes precise through prefixes. Przyjechać reaches a destination by vehicle, wyjść exits on foot, przejść crosses, dojść reaches on foot, and odjechać departs by vehicle.
Core rule: Prefixes combine with motion stems to encode arrival, exit, entry, crossing, reaching, and departure, often creating perfective verbs.
Notice it in context
Pociąg przyjechał, pasażerowie wyszli i przeszli przez halę.
The train arrived, passengers got out, and crossed the hall.
Three perfective prefixed verbs order completed route stages.
Weszliśmy do budynku i doszliśmy do recepcji.
We entered the building and reached reception.
Wejść and dojść mark entry and endpoint.
Autobus odjechał, zanim wybiegłem z domu.
The bus left before I ran out of home.
Odjechać and wybiec encode departure and outward running.
What to remember
- Prefix meaning interacts with base motion direction and aspect.
- Imperfective secondary forms exist: przyjeżdżać, wychodzić, przechodzić.
Common trap: Do not translate every English go with iść/jechać; the path may require a prefix.
