Instrumental beyond professions
Express means, company, route, and selected prepositional relationships.
Understand the choice
Instrumental answers kim? czym? and appears without a preposition for transport or manner, but with z for company. Its adjective/noun endings must agree.
Core rule: Bare instrumental marks means/route; z + instrumental company; nad/pod/przed/za/między take instrumental for location.
Notice it in context
Jedziemy pociągiem z nowym klientem.
We travel by train with a new client.
Pociągiem is means; z nowym klientem is company with matching endings.
Spacerujemy parkiem między starymi drzewami.
We walk through the park among old trees.
Parkiem is route instrumental; między takes plural instrumental drzewami.
Rozmawiam z kierowniczką przed biurem.
I speak with the manager in front of the office.
Z and przed both trigger instrumental.
What to remember
- Nie confuse z + instrumental “with” with z + genitive “from.”
- Instrumental plural adjective -ymi/-imi pairs noun -ami/-mi.
Common trap: Do not add z before a vehicle means: jadę autobusem.
