Genitive beyond negation

Use genitive for possession, quantity, absence, origin, and many prepositions.

Understand the choice

Genitive is a network of meanings rather than one English of. Recognizing its trigger prevents guessing endings from translation.

Core rule: Genitive follows quantities and prepositions such as do, od, bez, dla, obok, podczas, mimo; it also marks possession/absence.

Notice it in context

Nie mam czasu ani pieniędzy na ten projekt.

I have neither time nor money for this project.

Czasu/pieniędzy are negative-genitive objects; na ten projekt is accusative purpose.

Kilogram jabłek leży obok torby.

A kilogram of apples lies beside the bag.

Quantity kilogram and obok both trigger genitive jabłek/torby.

Podczas spotkania słuchamy opinii klienta.

During the meeting we listen to the client’s opinion.

Podczas takes genitive spotkania; klienta marks possession.

What to remember

  • Słuchać itself takes genitive.
  • Genitive plural endings are varied and often lexical.

Common trap: Do not search for a single English preposition equivalent.
