Być: conditional
Use byłbym/byłabym forms for unreal states and tactful suggestions.
Understand the choice
Polish conditional marks unreality, wishes, and politeness while retaining past-like agreement. The particle and person ending are conventionally joined to the verb form.
Core rule: Conditional być combines the past l-form with particle by and personal endings; it agrees in gender/category.
Notice it in context
Na twoim miejscu byłabym ostrożniejsza.
In your place, I would be more careful.
Byłabym and ostrożniejsza mark a female speaker; na twoim miejscu is locative hypothetical perspective.
Czy byłbyś jutro dostępny?
Would you be available tomorrow?
Byłbyś addresses a male ty.
Byłybyśmy gotowe wcześniej.
We women would be ready earlier.
Byłybyśmy and gotowe agree with an all-female group.
What to remember
- By can attach to conjunctions: gdybym, żebyśmy.
- Conditional is not past by itself; time comes from context.
Common trap: Do not use był in an unreal present condition without by.
