Aspect in past narration
Use imperfective for background/process and perfective for completed events that advance the story.
Understand the choice
Aspect supplies the viewpoint that Romance languages often express through tense contrast. Both verbs are past; their lexical aspect separates the scene from the event.
Core rule: In past narration, imperfective opens background/process/habit; perfective presents a bounded event or result.
Notice it in context
Czytałam raport, kiedy zadzwonił telefon.
I was reading the report when the phone rang.
Czytałam is ongoing imperfective background; perfective zadzwonił interrupts it.
Codziennie wracaliśmy pieszo.
Every day we returned on foot.
Repeated codziennie selects imperfective wracaliśmy.
Nagle ktoś otworzył drzwi.
Suddenly someone opened the door.
Nagle and perfective otworzył mark a completed change.
What to remember
- Duration can coexist with perfective when the whole interval is bounded.
- Some verbs lack a neat one-to-one aspect partner.
Common trap: Do not choose aspect only by action length.
