Wstawać: present tense

Use wstaj- forms for a repeated or ongoing getting-up routine.

Understand the choice

The imperfective verb suits routine and process. Person endings attach to wstaj-, while aspect decides whether the event is repeated/ongoing or bounded.

Core rule: Wstawać has present stem wstaj-; perfective wstać describes one completed getting up.

Notice it in context

Wstaję wcześnie, ale dzieci wstają o ósmej.

I get up early, but the children get up at eight.

Wstaję identifies ja; wstają agrees with children; time phrases contrast schedules.

O której wstajecie w weekend?

What time do you get up at the weekend?

Wstajecie agrees with wy.

Musimy jutro wstać wcześniej.

We must get up earlier tomorrow.

After musimy, perfective infinitive wstać frames one event.

What to remember

  • Wstawać/wstać is an aspect pair with stem alternation.
  • Wstań is the singular imperative.

Common trap: Do not use present-looking perfective wstanę for a current routine; it means future completion.
