Wiedzieć: present tense

State known facts and distinguish wiedzieć from znać.

Understand the choice

The complement reveals the kind of knowing. Wiedzieć answers what/where/when/whether; znać describes familiarity with a person, place, language, or item.

Core rule: Wiedzieć has wiem, wiesz, wie, wiemy, wiecie, wiedzą and introduces facts/clauses; znać takes familiar nouns.

Notice it in context

Wiem, kiedy odjeżdża następny pociąg.

I know when the next train leaves.

Wiem introduces an indirect kiedy clause; subject ja is omitted.

Wiecie, gdzie jest apteka?

Do you know where the pharmacy is?

Wiecie agrees with wy and introduces a location fact.

Znam Kraków, ale nie wiem, gdzie jest muzeum.

I know Kraków but do not know where the museum is.

Znam marks familiarity; wiem marks missing information.

What to remember

  • Nie wiem is the ordinary “I don’t know.”
  • Znać język means know a language; umieć mówić means know how to speak.

Common trap: Do not say wiem Kraków. Use znam Kraków.
