Directed and habitual motion verbs
Contrast iść/chodzić and jechać/jeździć by direction, repetition, and transport.
Understand the choice
Polish motion verbs encode more than walk versus ride. Time words teraz and zwykle make the directionality contrast visible and help select the right stem.
Core rule: Iść/jechać describe one directed trip; chodzić/jeździć describe habitual, repeated, or multidirectional movement.
Notice it in context
Teraz jadę do pracy, ale zwykle jeżdżę autobusem.
I am going to work now, but I usually travel by bus.
Jadę is one vehicle trip; jeżdżę is habitual travel; autobusem instrumental means.
Dziś idziemy do kina, a często chodzimy do teatru.
Today we are walking to the cinema; we often go to the theater.
Idziemy is one direction; chodzimy repeated.
Czy jeździsz rowerem po mieście?
Do you cycle around town?
Jeździsz is habitual/multidirectional; rowerem means; po mieście locative area.
What to remember
- Lecieć/latać and płynąć/pływać follow similar directed/habitual contrasts.
- Prefixes create many bounded motion verbs at higher levels.
Common trap: Do not choose only by walking versus vehicle; also choose one direction versus habit.
