The locative case

Use locative only after a preposition to talk about place and topic.

Understand the choice

Polish has no bare locative. Its preposition tells the relationship: w/na place, o topic, po after/around, przy near/at. Learn chunks because endings vary.

Core rule: Locative occurs after w, na, o, po, przy and has endings -e/-u/-i/-ach with stem alternations.

Notice it in context

Rozmawiamy o pracy w nowym biurze.

We talk about work in the new office.

O pracy is topic locative; w nowym biurze is place locative with adjective agreement.

Po spotkaniu siedzimy w kawiarni.

After the meeting we sit in a café.

Po spotkaniu and w kawiarni are locatives.

Myślę o tym problemie przy kolacji.

I think about this problem over dinner.

O problemie and przy kolacji are locative phrases.

What to remember

  • W domu is locative despite the unusual ending -u.
  • Locative often triggers consonant alternation: ręka→ręce.

Common trap: Do not use locative without a licensing preposition.
