Giving directions

Build a route from commands, turns, crossings, and landmarks.

Understand the choice

Clear directions alternate an action with a visible landmark. The proszę + infinitive frame avoids choosing a direct address form and works naturally with strangers.

Core rule: Polite public directions often use proszę + infinitive; przez takes accusative and na światłach uses locative.

Notice it in context

Proszę iść prosto, skręcić w lewo i przejść przez plac.

Please go straight, turn left, and cross the square.

Iść, skręcić, and przejść are coordinated infinitives; przez plac marks the crossed area.

Most jest za skrzyżowaniem.

The bridge is behind the intersection.

Most and skrzyżowanie appear as landmark and instrumental after za.

Światła są blisko; proszę skręcać w prawo.

The traffic lights are close; please turn right.

Światła and w prawo are listed route cues.

What to remember

  • Skręcić is perfective for one turn; skręcać describes process/repeated directions.
  • Przejść przez means cross/go through; przechodzić przez is imperfective.

Common trap: Do not use do lewej for turn left; use w lewo.
