Comparatives and superlatives
Form adjective/adverb comparisons and choose niż or od + genitive.
Understand the choice
Polish comparison has productive endings plus irregular lepszy, gorszy, większy, mniejszy. Agreement still applies to the compared noun.
Core rule: Comparatives often use -szy/-ejszy and niż; superlatives add naj-. Od + genitive can compare entities.
Notice it in context
Pociąg jest szybszy niż autobus, ale rower jest najtańszy.
The train is faster than the bus, but the bicycle is cheapest.
Szybszy agrees with pociąg and uses niż; najtańszy agrees with rower and adds naj-.
Moje mieszkanie jest większe od twojego.
My apartment is bigger than yours.
Większe agrees neuter mieszkanie; od takes genitive twojego.
Dzisiaj jest tak ciepło jak wczoraj.
Today it is as warm as yesterday.
Equality uses tak…jak with impersonal adverb ciepło.
What to remember
- Dobry→lepszy→najlepszy; źle→gorzej→najgorzej.
- Niż does not govern a case by itself; od always takes genitive.
Common trap: Do not add bardziej to every adjective when a synthetic comparative is standard.
