Być: past tense
Match gender and number in był/była/było/byli/były plus personal endings.
Understand the choice
Past być makes speaker gender audible and visible. Masculine-personal plural uses byli; all-female/non-person plural uses były, with -śmy/-ście for first/second plural.
Core rule: Polish past forms agree in gender/masculine-personal category and attach person endings to the l-participle.

Yesterday I was busy, but my colleagues were free.
Byłam and zajęta mark a female speaker; byli/wolni mark masculine-personal colleagues.

Byłeś addresses a male ty.

What to remember
- Mixed-gender groups with at least one male person traditionally use byliśmy.
- The person ending is mobile in older/literary patterns but attached form is neutral.
Common trap: Do not use one past form for every speaker.
