Subject omission and word order
Let endings identify the subject and move time/place for emphasis without changing verb form.
Understand the choice
Rich endings permit fronting a time or place without German-style inversion. Dzisiaj pracuję and pracuję dzisiaj differ mainly in focus, not grammaticality.
Core rule: Polish subject pronouns are often omitted; word order is flexible, but neutral topic–comment patterns and context control emphasis.
Notice it in context
Dzisiaj pracuję w domu, a jutro jadę do biura.
Today I work at home, and tomorrow I go to the office.
Pracuję/jadę encode ja; dzisiaj/jutro provide contrast; no pronoun is needed.
W Krakowie mieszkają moi rodzice.
My parents live in Kraków.
Place is fronted; plural verb agrees with following subject.
Ja piję kawę, a ty herbatę.
I drink coffee, and you tea.
Pronouns are kept for contrast; the second verb may be omitted.
What to remember
- Clitic-like się has placement preferences and rarely begins a neutral sentence.
- New/heavy information often comes later.
Common trap: Do not interpret flexible order as random order; changes create emphasis.
