Negation and the genitive

Change many accusative direct objects to genitive after a negated verb.

Understand the choice

The negative genitive is one of Polish’s central case alternations. Learn pairs: mam kawę/nie mam kawy, jem mięso/nie jem mięsa, widzę Annę/nie widzę Anny.

Core rule: A direct object that would be accusative in an affirmative clause commonly takes genitive under verbal negation.

Notice it in context

Mam samochód, ale nie mam roweru.

I have a car, but I do not have a bicycle.

Samochód is positive accusative inanimate; roweru is genitive after nie mam.

Piję herbatę, ale nie piję kawy.

I drink tea but do not drink coffee.

Herbatę is accusative; kawy genitive under negation.

Ona widzi psa, ale nie widzi kota.

She sees the dog but not the cat.

Psa is animate accusative; kota is genitive negative object.

What to remember

  • Some modern usage permits accusative in restricted contrasts, but genitive is the core learner pattern.
  • Negating być does not create an object: to nie jest kawa.

Common trap: Do not leave the affirmative object form unchanged after ordinary verbal negation.
