Jeść: present tense
Use jem/jesz/je and understand accusative versus genitive under negation.
Understand the choice
Jeść supplies both an irregular present and an early case contrast. A positive object is accusative; under ordinary negation it often shifts to genitive.
Core rule: Jeść has jem, jesz, je, jemy, jecie, jedzą; positive direct objects are accusative.
Notice it in context
Jem zupę, a dzieci jedzą kanapki.
I eat soup, and the children eat sandwiches.
Jem is first singular; zupę is feminine accusative; jedzą agrees with plural dzieci.
Co jesz na śniadanie?
What do you eat for breakfast?
Jesz agrees with ty; co is interrogative object.
Nie jemy dziś mięsa.
We are not eating meat today.
Negation triggers genitive mięsa.
What to remember
- Je is he/she eats; jest is he/she is.
- The perfective partner zjeść presents eating as completed.
Common trap: Do not confuse je and jest.
