Telling time

Ask the time and schedule events with o + locative ordinal hour.

Understand the choice

Polish tells clock time with feminine ordinal numerals understood after godzina. Keep clock labels separate from duration: godzina/minuta for spans, o trzeciej for schedules.

Core rule: Clock answers use ordinal hour forms; o marks event time, and wpół do czwartej means halfway to four.

Notice it in context

Jest kwadrans po trzeciej, a lekcja zaczyna się o wpół do czwartej.

It is quarter past three, and the lesson starts at half past three.

Po trzeciej is after three; o wpół do czwartej schedules 3:30.

Pociąg odjeżdża punktualnie o ósmej.

The train leaves punctually at eight.

O ósmej is the locative ordinal time.

Czekamy od godziny i dziesięciu minut.

We have been waiting for an hour and ten minutes.

Godziny and minut follow od in genitive duration.

What to remember

  • Wpół do fourth counts toward the next hour, like German halb vier.
  • W południe and o północy are conventional forms.

Common trap: Do not use cardinal trzy after o for time: o trzeciej.
