Chcieć: present tense

Express wants and intentions with chc-/chcą forms.

Understand the choice

Chcieć carries person and supports a desired noun or action. In service encounters poproszę is often softer, while chcę clearly states desire or intention.

Core rule: Chcieć has chcę, chcesz, chce, chcemy, chcecie, chcą and takes an infinitive directly.

Notice it in context

Chcę uczyć się polskiego, a oni chcą mówić po angielsku.

I want to learn Polish, and they want to speak English.

Chcę/chcą carry different subjects; uczyć się and mówić remain infinitives.

Chcesz kawę czy herbatę?

Do you want coffee or tea?

Chcesz agrees with ty; two drinks are accusative choices.

Chcemy odwiedzić muzeum jutro.

We want to visit the museum tomorrow.

Chcemy carries my; perfective odwiedzić frames one visit.

What to remember

  • Chce is he/she wants; chcę is I want—the ogonek matters.
  • Chciałbym/chciałabym is a polite conditional request.

Common trap: Do not add a preposition before the infinitive: chcę uczyć się.
