The accusative case

Mark direct objects and notice feminine -ę and masculine animate genitive-like forms.

Understand the choice

Accusative form depends on gender and animacy, not merely position. Compare książka→książkę, pies→psa, and stół→stół.

Core rule: Direct objects take accusative: feminine -a→-ę, masculine animate often equals genitive, masculine inanimate/neuter often match nominative.

Notice it in context

Kobieta kupuje książkę i widzi psa.

The woman buys a book and sees a dog.

Kobieta is nominative subject; książkę feminine accusative; psa masculine animate accusative.

Mężczyzna czyta gazetę.

The man reads a newspaper.

Gazeta becomes gazetę as direct object.

Dziecko otwiera okno i bierze telefon.

The child opens a window and takes a phone.

Neuter okno and masculine inanimate telefon look unchanged in accusative.

What to remember

  • Masculine-personal plural accusative also patterns with genitive.
  • Case is a role; unchanged forms still have accusative function.

Common trap: Do not assume every object changes visibly.
