Core subjunctive triggers

Recognize will, necessity, emotion, doubt, opinion, and concession before choosing the mood.

Understand the choice

Mood reflects how the speaker frames a proposition, not whether it is objectively true. Bisogna che, voglio che, sono felice che, dubito che, and benché each license the subjunctive.

Core rule: Many expressions of will, necessity, emotion, doubt, possibility, and subjective evaluation take che + subjunctive.

Notice it in context

È essenziale che tutti possano esprimere la propria opinione.

It is essential that everyone can express their opinion.

È essenziale che is the trigger; tutti is subordinate subject; possano is subjunctive potere.

Desidero che rispondiate entro lunedì.

I would like you to reply by Monday.

Desiderare che with a changed subject triggers rispondiate.

Benché sia tardi, la discussione continua.

Although it is late, the discussion continues.

Benché takes sia even while conceding a fact.

What to remember

  • With the same subject, an infinitive often replaces che: desidero partire.
  • Secondo me is followed by an ordinary assertion, not automatically subjunctive.

Common trap: Do not select subjunctive merely because che appears.
