The past conditional
Describe an unreal past result, regret, or unconfirmed report with conditional auxiliary + participle.
Understand the choice
The past conditional looks back at an outcome that did not occur or is reported without full confirmation. The auxiliary carries conditional distance; participle follows normal agreement rules.
Core rule: Past conditional uses conditional avere/essere + participle; unreal past se clauses use trapassato congiuntivo.

Con più tempo avremmo scelto un’altra soluzione.
With more time we would have chosen another solution.
Avremmo is conditional avere; scelto is irregular participle; con più tempo supplies unreal condition.
Se avesse visto il messaggio, sarebbe venuta.
If she had seen the message, she would have come.
Trapassato congiuntivo condition pairs with past-conditional result; venuta agrees.
Il ministro avrebbe annunciato le dimissioni.
The minister has reportedly announced his resignation.
Journalistic conditional marks unconfirmed information.
What to remember
- The reporting conditional does not claim the report is false, only unconfirmed by the writer.
- Past essere-auxiliary forms retain subject agreement.
Common trap: Do not put past conditional directly after se: se avesse visto, not se avrebbe visto.
