Business and economic change

Distinguish revenue, profit, costs, investment, hiring, and competition.

Understand the choice

Business vocabulary must separate sales revenue from what remains after costs. Fatturato is revenue; utile is profit. Investment, hiring, growth, and competition describe different parts of strategy.

Core rule: Aumentare il fatturato, realizzare un utile, ridurre i costi, investire in, and assumere personale are business collocations.

Notice it in context

Nonostante l’aumento dei costi, l’azienda prevede di investire e assumere.

Despite rising costs, the company plans to invest and hire.

Nonostante takes the noun aumento; prevede di introduces coordinated investire and assumere.

Il fatturato cresce, ma l’utile diminuisce.

Revenue grows but profit falls.

Fatturato and utile contrast inflow and remainder.

La concorrenza spinge l’azienda a ridurre i costi e cercare crescita.

Competition pushes the company to reduce costs and seek growth.

Concorrenza, costi, and crescita form pressure and response.

What to remember

  • Azienda and impresa both mean company/business.
  • Assumere means hire, take on, or assume depending on object.

Common trap: Do not translate fatturato as profit; it is revenue before costs.
