Debate and evidence
State a position, qualify it, answer objections, and identify weak assumptions.
Understand the choice
A strong discussion separates claims from evidence and disagreement from dismissal. Identify the central questione, test the ipotesi, notice possible pregiudizio, and represent the opposing point of view fairly.
Core rule: Presentare un argomento, fornire prove, sollevare un’obiezione, and mettere in discussione un’ipotesi are debate collocations.
Notice it in context
L’argomento sembra convincente, ma si basa su un’ipotesi fragile.
The argument seems convincing but rests on a weak assumption.
Argomento is evaluated by convincente; si basa su introduces ipotesi; fragile qualifies it.
Questa prova risponde all’obiezione principale.
This evidence answers the main objection.
Prova supports and obiezione challenges the claim.
Per distinguere i punti di vista bisogna riconoscere i pregiudizi.
To distinguish viewpoints one must recognize biases.
Distinguere, punti di vista, and pregiudizi support analysis.
What to remember
- Argomento is a reason/topic, while litigio is a quarrel.
- Questione is an issue/question; domanda is a direct question/request.
Common trap: Do not present an unsupported ipotesi as una prova.
