Concession and opposition

Acknowledge a fact while showing it does not prevent a contrasting result.

Understand the choice

Concession differs from simple contrast because the first fact could have blocked the second. Connector grammar matters: anche se asserts with indicative, benché frames through subjunctive, and nonostante can introduce a noun.

Core rule: Anche se normally takes indicative; benché/sebbene take subjunctive; nonostante/malgrado can take a noun or subjunctive clause.

Notice it in context

Anche se il metodo è imperfetto, rimane utile.

Even though the method is imperfect, it remains useful.

Anche se introduces indicative è; rimane states the surviving result.

Benché i costi siano aumentati, il progetto continua.

Although costs have risen, the project continues.

Benché triggers present-subjunctive siano.

Nonostante diverse obiezioni, la proposta è stata approvata.

Despite several objections, the proposal was approved.

Nonostante introduces the noun phrase obiezioni.

What to remember

  • Tuttavia and ciononostante connect independent statements.
  • Pur + gerund is a compact formal concession: pur sapendo….

Common trap: Do not use subjunctive after ordinary anche se in neutral standard usage.
