Il quale and possessive relative structures

Use preposition + il quale forms for clarity and express whose with di cui or del/della quale.

Understand the choice

Advanced relatives help when cui would be ambiguous or the preposition is complex. Rebuild the original phrase—basarsi sul rapporto—then replace the noun with the agreeing relative form.

Core rule: Il quale/la quale/i quali/le quali agree with the antecedent and combine with prepositions; di cui often expresses whose/of which.

Notice it in context

Ecco il rapporto sul quale si basa la decisione.

Here is the report on which the decision is based.

Sul quale comes from su + il quale and agrees with masculine rapporto.

È una decisione le cui conseguenze saranno importanti.

It is a decision whose consequences will be important.

Le cui agrees with plural consequences while cui links possession to decision.

La sala accanto alla quale c’è il bar è chiusa.

The room next to which the bar is located is closed.

Accanto a combines with feminine alla quale.

What to remember

  • Cui itself is invariable; any article before it belongs to the possessed noun: il cui nome, le cui conseguenze.
  • Il quale can sound formal when simple che is unambiguous.

Common trap: Do not make cui agree; agreement appears on its article or on il quale forms.
