Volere in the present conditional

Use vorrei/vorremmo for wishes and polite service requests.

Understand the choice

Vorrei is more than a memorized café phrase: it expresses a wish with distance from a direct demand. A noun or infinitive follows without a preposition.

Core rule: Volere uses conditional stem vorr- plus the regular conditional endings.

Notice it in context

Vorrei modificare la prenotazione, per favore.

I would like to change the booking, please.

Vorrei softens first-person request; modificare remains infinitive; prenotazione is object.

Vorrebbe aspettare qualche minuto?

Would you like to wait a few minutes?

Vorrebbe addresses formal Lei or a third person.

Vorremmo una camera più tranquilla.

We would like a quieter room.

Vorremmo takes the requested noun phrase directly.

What to remember

  • The double r belongs to the conditional stem vorr-.
  • Voglio is stronger and appropriate for a firm intention, not always a service request.

Common trap: Do not add di before the infinitive: vorrei modificare.
