Che and cui in relative clauses

Use che without a preposition for subject/direct object and cui after a preposition.

Understand the choice

Italian relative forms do not show gender for che/cui. Rebuild the missing role inside the smaller clause: no preposition gives che; con/a/di/per plus complement gives that preposition + cui.

Core rule: Che is invariable as subject or direct object; preposition + cui handles indirect and prepositional roles.

Notice it in context

La collega che dirige il progetto è quella con cui lavoro.

The colleague who leads the project is the one I work with.

First che is subject of dirige; con cui replaces con la collega in lavoro.

Il libro che hai consigliato è utile.

The book you recommended is useful.

Che is direct object of hai consigliato.

La persona a cui ho scritto ha risposto.

The person I wrote to replied.

A cui restores scrivere a qualcuno.

What to remember

  • Il quale forms can replace cui/che in formal or ambiguous contexts.
  • Cui never takes an accent.

Common trap: Do not choose chi for an ordinary relative with a stated antecedent; use che/cui.
