Passato prossimo or imperfetto?
Layer a bounded event over background, habit, or an ongoing past action.
Understand the choice
The contrast is viewpoint, not simply duration. Imperfetto opens an event from within; passato prossimo packages it as complete. Many narratives need both layers.
Core rule: Use imperfetto for background, description, habit, or an action viewed in progress; passato prossimo for a bounded event or change.
Notice it in context
Preparavo la cena quando è suonato il telefono.
I was preparing dinner when the phone rang.
Preparavo is ongoing background; è suonato is the event that enters it.
Ogni domenica visitavamo i nonni.
Every Sunday we visited our grandparents.
Ogni domenica supports habitual imperfetto.
All’improvviso qualcuno ha aperto la porta.
Suddenly someone opened the door.
All’improvviso and completed change favor passato prossimo.
What to remember
- A state can use passato prossimo when its boundaries matter: sono stato malato tre giorni.
- Mental-state verbs can change meaning by viewpoint, such as sapevo versus ho saputo.
Common trap: Do not choose only by how many minutes an action lasted.
