Uscire: present tense

Use esc- in singular and third plural, usc- in noi and voi.

Understand the choice

Uscire covers leaving a place and going out socially. Da marks the place exited; con names companions; a can introduce purpose such as uscire a cena.

Core rule: Uscire uses esc- for singular and loro, usc- for noi and voi.

Notice it in context

Esco dall’ufficio alle sei, ma loro escono più tardi.

I leave the office at six, but they go out later.

Esco is first singular; dall’ufficio is da + l’; escono is third plural.

Usciamo con gli amici questa sera.

We are going out with friends tonight.

Usciamo uses usc- and con names company.

A che ora esci da scuola?

What time do you leave school?

Esci agrees with tu; da scuola gives origin without article.

What to remember

  • Uscire uses essere in compound tenses: sono uscito/a.
  • Uscita is an exit or outing depending on context.

Common trap: Do not form io uscio. The singular stem is esc-: esco.
