Place prepositions
Choose a, in, da, and articulated forms by destination type and function.
Understand the choice
Italian place prepositions are partly semantic and partly lexical. Classify city, country/region, person, and building, then learn exceptions through frequent chunks.
Core rule: Use a for cities, in for most countries/regions, da for a person/professional or someone’s place, and articulated forms for many specific buildings.
Notice it in context
Andiamo in Sicilia e poi restiamo da amici a Palermo.
We are going to Sicily and then staying with friends in Palermo.
In Sicilia marks a region; da amici marks hosts; a Palermo marks the city.
Torno dal medico e passo per Roma.
I am returning from the doctor and passing through Rome.
Dal marks a professional’s place; per marks route.
Lavoriamo in banca vicino al centro.
We work at a bank near downtown.
In banca is conventional; al centro is articulated.
What to remember
- Essere dal medico can mean be at the doctor’s office.
- A casa has no article; alla casa refers to a specific house in suitable context.
Common trap: Do not use a before every country/region: in Italia, in Sicilia.
