Piacere and servire
Let the liked or needed item control singular piace/serve or plural piacciono/servono.
Understand the choice
These verbs reverse the English viewpoint. Mi identifies to me, while giacca or scarpe determines the verb number. An infinitive counts as singular.
Core rule: With piacere/servire, the experiencer is indirect and the liked/needed item is grammatical subject.
Notice it in context
Mi piace questa giacca, ma mi servono scarpe più comode.
I like this jacket, but I need more comfortable shoes.
Singular giacca triggers piace; plural scarpe triggers servono; mi is experiencer in both.
Ci piacciono i musei e ci serve una mappa.
We like museums and need a map.
Plural musei selects piacciono; singular mappa selects serve.
Ti piace viaggiare da solo?
Do you like traveling alone?
The infinitive viaggiare triggers singular piace.
What to remember
- Use a + stressed person for emphasis: a Marta piace.
- Past piacere often uses essere and agreement: mi è piaciuta la mostra.
Common trap: Do not make the verb agree with mi/ti/ci. It agrees with the liked or needed thing.
